Streaming Services With the Best Content, According to Viewers

Between Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime, it can be challenging to keep up with your favorite shows. Every week, it seems like a new streaming service spawns and begins to pump out new content for viewers to consume. With so many shows and so little time, it can be hard to figure out which streaming platforms give you the best bang for your buck.

When it comes to quality content, sometimes less is more. For every blockbuster hit like Stranger Things, there are bound to be even more lackluster misses on the horizon. The team at Versa Networks did some research to discover which streaming services had the most top-rated shows and which ones were full of duds. We’ll help you determine which services to drop and which are worth keeping.

The Best Platforms for Original Series

When it comes to content that you can’t find anywhere else on cable, Hulu was the preferred platform by many viewers. Hulu is home to many great originals like Little Fires Everywhere and Only Murders in the Building, but dramas and sitcoms aren’t the only genres the platform is good for. Viewers who enjoy documentaries and reality shows will be thrilled to find out that Hulu has a strong variety of news and docuseries for them to binge-watch.

The founding father of movie and show streaming platforms, Netflix, came in second after Hulu. Netflix is known for regularly producing smash hits like Cobra Kai and The Haunting of Hill House along with having a regular rotation of everyone’s beloved TV shows. While variety is a good thing to have, Netflix has a reputation for long wait times for new episodes and canceling shows after just two seasons. Thankfully, viewers who are looking forward to more of The Crown should have another season to binge this November.

Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ tied for last place, winning only two states each on our list. While Disney+ is great for Marvel enthusiasts and Star Wars fanatics, it offers little in variety when compared to streaming titans like Hulu and Netflix. Amazon Prime Video was late to the party when it comes to original content, but it’s beginning to quickly make up for it with popular series like The Boys, Wheel of Time, and The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power.

What’s Your State’s Favorite Series?

Netflix’s original series Dark was the most searched-for series in nine states throughout the country. The Netflix original had a nearly perfect audience and critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s easy to see why. Dark combines elements of mystery, science fiction, and horror to weave an intricate yet compelling story. The show wrapped things up in 2020 with season three, making sure not to overstay its welcome and left viewers satisfied after experiencing one of the best Netflix series in recent memory.

What If…? and The Haunting of Hill House won five states a piece and tied for second place. What If…? reimagines iconic MCU characters and events and retells their stories in unexpected ways. Marvel fans will be pleased to know that a second season of the animated hit is scheduled to premiere in early 2023. The Haunting of Hill House is a supernatural drama that draws inspiration from Shirley Jackson’s novel. The spooky Netflix thriller won over states that are known for their abundance of haunted houses, like Ohio and Missouri.

The Best Bang for Your Buck

If you’re looking for the best overall value, Netflix and Amazon Prime are clear winners with a wide variety of shows to choose from and the highest average total rating among their series. Viewers who already have a cable subscription and would like to watch exclusives they can’t find anywhere else on TV should look into Hulu for their wide selection of original content. For people who have to have their Marvel flicks and Disney exclusives, Disney+ is a great way to relive all your favorite childhood memories and catch the latest entries in the Star Wars saga.

Closing Thoughts

It can be challenging to juggle logins for multiple streaming accounts to keep up with your favorite shows. New content is always around the corner, making it difficult to decide which subscriptions are worth your time and which ones you should axe. For some viewers who are interested in shows across every platform, you might have to collect them all. What are some of your favorite platforms to stream on?

Streaming on the go is a trend that we aren’t going to see fall in popularity any time soon. Does your team travel for work and stream during train rides or layovers? Watching shows and movies on potentially unsecured networks can expose company laptops to malware and ransomware risks. Versa SASE can help your organization monitor and secure all of your company’s network users regardless of their locations.

To determine which streaming platforms gave viewers the most bang for their buck, we looked at a variety of different data points. We determined the most popular shows on Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video and reviewed their ratings on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. We also looked at how much each streaming service charged per month. Only streaming services with a variety original series were included in this data. Streaming services such as HBO and Paramount were not included, as many of their originals air on cable.

Since IMDb ratings are out of 10, while Rotten Tomatoes tomato-meter is out of 100, we multiplied IMDb ratings by 10 for total ratings for each streaming service. Our team pulled the top 10 shows from each streaming platform based on highest ratings, and ran each through Google Trends to determine the most popular original series in each state. The sources we used to determine the most popular shows on each platform were:
