ESG Lab Validates Versa Networks’ Secure SD-WAN for Amazon Web Services

Report confirms that Versa’s Cloud IP Platform integrates with AWS and allows the creation of a high-performance SD-WAN
San Jose, Calif., January 24, 2018

Versa Networks, a leading innovator of next-generation software-based networking and security solutions, today announced that Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) validated the integration of the Versa Networks’ Cloud IP Platform with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and explored additional capabilities in a report educating customers on the capabilities of nine Software-defined wide-area networking (SD-WAN) vendors working with AWS. In the report “SD-WAN Integration with Amazon Web Services – Versa Networks,” authored by validation analysts Tony Palmer and Alex Arcilla, the ESG Lab review documents its hands-on testing of Versa Networks’ Cloud IP Platform and how it integrates with AWS.

The ESG review was written to educate customers on the capabilities that Versa Networks provides when working with AWS. ESG describes Versa Networks’ solution and highlights the business value it can deliver to customers via its integration with AWS.

According to the report, “SD-WAN is built on the same principles as software-defined networking (SDN): It abstracts the wide-area network to a set of capabilities that is independent of how those capabilities are provided. SD-WAN connects organizations’ data centers, branch offices, and cloud environments. As a network architecture, SD-WAN disaggregates the control of the network from the data flow while simultaneously aggregating multiple physical and/or virtual devices into a single logical network. The control plane should be agile to enable dynamic adjustment of network wide traffic flows to meet changing needs, and all devices should be centrally manageable.”

The report also stated, “Given that most organizations using cloud services still have on-premises resources, it makes sense that organizations would strive to ensure ubiquitous connectivity and create a seamless experience for employees and customers. As a result, many organizations are considering SD-WAN to help consolidate their networking visibility and management of cloud and on-premises usage.”

About Versa Networks’ Cloud IP Platform

Versa’s Cloud IP Platform removes the “hard” from today’s hardware driven networking and software-defines secure branch and cloud connectivity services. The software platform features a comprehensive set of networking, security and application-aware capabilities. Versa customers can deploy a fully Software Defined Branch (SD-Branch), which combines software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) and software-defined security (SD-Security), to meet their digital transformation needs. This dramatically simplifies operations while improving the end-user experience of cloud and SaaS applications. The result is increased service agility, improved user-experience and better productivity for their business.

Testing Methodology

ESG and AWS created a test plan in two sections: a questionnaire to assess SD-WAN features and capabilities, and test scenarios for assessing SD-WAN tunnel performance (throughput) and availability (failover and convergence time between SD-WAN instances). Versa Networks agreed to assess its solution’s capabilities and levels of integration with AWS. ESG met with Versa Networks, conducted interviews and investigated test scenarios onsite at its facility.

AWS provided cloud resources for the test environment, while Versa Networks provided software licenses and facilities (e.g., broadband connections and devices). More information on the testing and test methodology can be found in the full report.

Test Results

ESG validated the integration of the Versa Networks’ solution with AWS and explored additional capabilities. Features include:

  • Solution flexibility natively supporting virtual or bare metal deployment modes.
  • High performance support with single-root I/O (SR-IOV) for AWS instances larger or equal to c3.xlarge
  • Verified AWS CloudFormation templates for automated configuration and deployment of Versa SD-WAN end-points and Head-End infrastructure.
  • Enhanced VPC and Zone redundancy using VRRP between Versa SD-WAN endpoints.
  • Efficient resource utilization of compute and memory while delivering high performance bi-directional throughput. Low instance utilization translates into additional processing resources to support multiple simultaneous user traffic streams. A Versa customer can decrease their network and management complexity.
  • Support for routing between Amazon Virtual Private Cloud’s (Amazon VPC) support for transit VPCs on AWS.
  • Support for auto-discovery and automated orchestration of Versa SD-WAN on AWS natively with Versa Director, the unified and centralized management platform for the Versa Cloud IP Platform.

“ESG Lab has validated that Versa Networks provides a cloud-native solution with the required baseline level of integration with AWS—bootstrapping options for deployment, AES 256 encryption over all link types, traffic shaping controls, and IAM role-based access for security,” said the report’s authors. “Versa Networks supported additional features and functionality that are above and beyond this baseline of support, based on their target market and use cases.”

“Versa Networks, a Registered Partner in the AWS Partner Network (APN), is pleased to be recognized by ESG as a recommended SD-WAN vendor for AWS customers in its latest report,” said Kumar Mehta, co-founder and CDO of Versa Networks. “It’s undeniable that the networking landscape has significantly evolved as enterprises shift to cloud-based models to accelerate performance and lower costs. ESG’s testing and validation of Versa’s integration with AWS underscores that its Cloud IP Platform is strongly positioned to help customers build out their networks to remain competitive and address current and future business growth.”
