There’s no doubt Americans have a serious love for coffee, but does your flavor preference depend on your location? Read on to find out your state’s pick.
What do coffee flavor preferences look like across America?
Whether you’re a Starbucks diehard or local coffee shop lover, America’s love of coffee is something that binds the nation together. Some like it hot, some like it iced, others like to take it black and many enjoy indulging in cream and sugar. But while we all have different opinions when it comes to our cup of Joe, do our preferences depend on the part of the country we live in? Read on to find out!
To determine which coffee flavor is the most popular in each state, we gathered a list of a variety of different coffee flavors, then analyzed the volume of those terms on Google Trends from August 2021–2022.
According to our analysis, caramel flavored coffee reigns supreme as the most popular coffee flavor in the country, ranking #1 for search volume in 11 states. In a close second place spot, mocha flavored coffee won in ten states, followed by vanilla (nine states), hazelnut (seven states), cinnamon roll (six states), and pumpkin (five states).
When taking a closer look at each region’s winning flavor, there were some interesting insights that made us believe coffee flavor preferences may truly be dependent on your location in the country. Perhaps the spectacular New England fall foliage had an influence on pumpkin coffee lovers, as this was the most popular flavor in the Northeast. Vanilla was the strong favorite in the Midwest, while mocha won over the West. The South’s love of everything sweet may have influenced the choice of caramel as this region’s favorite.
There were three flavors that only won in one state a piece: Illinois’ top flavor was butter pecan, Amaretto won in Indiana, while Maine’s preferred flavor was blueberry.
